Historically each of the ‘Nine Incorporated Trades of Dundee’ appointed a Scrivener or clerk to keep a record of all decisions, prices and members of the trade. These records were hand written into ‘Lockit Books’ by the Scriveners. Some of these books, for example the 300 year old Hammerman’s book pictured, remain in the archives as a lasting legacy of all that has happened in that trade.
Inspired by this tradition we have encouraged the artists and the Nine Trades of Dundee organisers to document their process through blogs.
We also commissioned two texts for our Nine Trades of Dundee publication (launched November 2010) to contextualise the project within a wider frame of reference. These texts were written by Jenny Brownrigg and John Dummett.
Please get in touch if you would like to receive this publication - we are keen to have a broad distribution so the findings of the project can be useful to others developing work in the public realm.
