Historically each of the ‘Nine Incorporated Trades of Dundee’ appointed a Scrivener or clerk to keep a record of all decisions, prices and members of the trade. These records were hand written into ‘Lockit Books’ by the Scriveners. Some of these books, for example the 300 year old Hammerman’s book pictured, remain in the archives as a lasting legacy of all that has happened in that trade.
Inspired by this tradition we have encouraged the artists and the Nine Trades of Dundee organisers to document their process through blogs. We will also commission a piece of writing to contextualise the project for a publication due to be launched in October.
